SPOKANE, Wash. – Cathy McMorris Rodgers is an ability-advocate who fights for people with disabilities and celebrates what every person has to offer. Her latest TV ad, which can be seen across the Eastern Washington airwaves starting today, tells Cathy’s own story as an ability-advocate. Cathy explains how she is working to change laws so that people with disabilities, like her son Cole, disabled veterans, and other people who are disadvantaged can work, save, and live full and independent lives.

“When Cole was born, I knew his life would be different than most—more difficult. But just because something is difficult doesn’t mean it isn’t positive,” Cathy said. “We owe it to our children to give them the tools they need to succeed, to help them reach their full potential so they can chase their dreams. That’s why I am proud to be a member of the disability community, a community that doesn’t put labels or limits on people and celebrates what everyone has to offer this world.”

When Cathy’s son Cole was born, she was told not to put any assets in his name as it could jeopardize his benefits. “I think that sends the wrong message to parents and families who are hoping to give their children all that life has to offer,” Cathy said. That’s why in 2014, Cathy helped get her ABLE Act, the biggest disability legislation since the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed into law to allow people with disabilities and their families to create tax-free savings accounts and allow them to save for the future without putting their important benefits at risk. She built upon this landmark legislation last winter when she got her ABLE to Work Act and ABLE Financial Planning Act signed into law as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. These bills help people with disabilities explore the possibility of work and save their earnings in their ABLE account, and allow parents to transfer funds from a college savings account over to an ABLE account. After all, as Cathy likes to say, “a job is so much more than a paycheck, it’s what gives us dignity and purpose, the opportunity for a better life.”

A descendant of Oregon Trail pioneers, Cathy is the fifth generation of the McMorris family to call the Pacific Northwest home. She was the first in her family to graduate from college and worked for 13 years in the family orchard and fruit stand in Kettle Falls. She was the 200th woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and is the only woman to give birth three times while serving. Cathy and her husband, Brian, retired Navy carrier pilot, live in Spokane with their three children - Cole, Grace and Brynn.

This is Cathy’s fifth ad of her reelection campaign. Her previous ads “Mom,” “Every Day,” “Delivered,” and “Two” all highlight Cathy’s deep roots in Eastern Washington, her record of results, and her commitment to the people she represents.
